December 2009

Notes from the Mayor

Just three years ago, the town was booming with activity.  Cuppy’s Coffee and Starburcks opened for business and all other business locations were filled. Today, both coffee shops are closed as is our Italian restaurant and there are no current prospects to open any new establishments in these vacant buildings.  On the flip side, though, both the Fairfield Inn and Aegean Restaurant opened and seem to be prospering.   Everyone knows the times are challenging, the Town commission is also aware and we continue to scrutinize all expenses to maintain a low tax burden.

I don't know if it is associated with the economy, but there has been an increase of theft incidents in Shalimar.  I remind you to secure all of your property.  This includes locking your vehicle even in your own driveway.  If you store any property in the Townhall lot, we recommend you secure it properly.  One of our residents recently lost a boat trailer which was secured with a lock.  If you see anything that seems suspicious or anyone just hanging around, please call 225-1272 anytime.

Hopefully, this coming year, we will develop our new secure RV parking facility on Richburg Drive.  We are also currently accepting proposals from pavement contractors to resurface a large portion of Shalimar Drive especially the area behind Meigs Middle School.  Depending on the cost, we have slated other areas for resurfacing as well.
I sincerely wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, Happy New Year.

The Shalimar Christmas Parade and Party will be on Tuesday, December 8. The parade will start on the south side of Eglin Pkwy at 5:00 and will end at approximately 6:00. The Commission will meet briefly at 6, then the party will begin.  Food, drinks, and holiday cheer all provided. Please come by and meet your Shalimar neighbors.

Notes from the Police Department

The foxes are gone and the bears have arrived. There are many steps you can take to avoid the impact of bears. First, to eliminate the presence of bears do not store garage containers outside. They should only be placed curbside the night before the morning of pickup. Keep dog food inside and grills clean. Remember bears can smell 7 times greater than a Bloodhound so these steps are essential. Never feed or approach the bears, call your local police at 651-1115.

We have had a few complaints from residents and school officials about parking on Erwin Fleet and Shalimar Drive behind the Meigs Middle School baseball field. This is not a pick-up or drop-off spot for children. The police and school officials will start to enforce no parking in this area as it is frequently used by buses and children walking home. The safety of our kids is out biggest concern.

The Holidays are here. Please remember to abide by the traffic laws and watch for the influx of kids in the neighborhoods. Call ahead to inform about your guests parking on the rights-of-way. Have a blessed and joyful Holiday season.

The long anticipated RV storage lot across Richbourg Ave from the Fairfield Inn is finally coming to fruition.  The Planning and Zoning Board will be making development recommendations to the Town Commission by February of next year and they need your input.  The current concept is to provide fenced-in storage spaces for Shalimar resident's motor homes, boats, trailers, jet skis, etc.  All stored items will have to have current registrations.  A monthly fee will be collected to pay for the development costs over a period of 4-5 years.  The initial fee will probably be around $1 per ft./month of space used, but will be set well below other local storage rates.  The P&Z needs to know what mix of different sized parking areas to plan for - if you have an RV item that you would like to store in the RV lot, please contact town hall with the item description and approximate length/width.  Other comments and ideas are also solicited.  Please call 651-5723 or email tb@shalimarflorida.org.
