TOWN OF SHALIMAR
COMMISSION MEETING
MAY 08, 2001
CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting of the Shalimar Town Commission was called to order by Mayor Pro Tem Elaine Tucker at 6:03 p.m. in Townhall chambers. She led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Commissioner Kevin Reeves: present
Others in attendance: Town Clerk Jill Vanstraten, Shalimar Police Chief Jim Spires, and Shalimar Residents Rik Larson, Jim Foley, and Arthur Johanson.
OLD BUSINESS:
I. APPROVE MINUTES OF APRIL 10, 2001 TOWN COMMISSION MEETING - Comm. Garcia moved to approve the minutes. Comm. Henderson seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
II. TOWN HALL RENOVATION - Mayor Pro-Tem Tucker explained the final check has been issued to Diamondhead Constructor's and all construction by them has been completed. She held a brief discussion on a landscaping design that will be used for the front and sides of the new Townhall.
NEW BUSINESS:
I. TOWN RESIDENTS' TIME - MAYOR COMBS - (Comm. Tucker). Resident Arthur Johanson explained a rumor concerning the sale of the Shalimar Yacht Basin. Resident Rik Larson commended the Police Department on the continued effort of speed control on Old Ferry Road.
II. APPROVE
RESOLUTION 2001-08 DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT - Comm.
Henderson moved to approve Resolution 2001-08.
Comm. Garcia seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
III. SECOND
READING OF THE TREE ORDINANCE - The second reading of Ordinance 2001-03, Tree
Protection and Maintenance was read by Comm. Tucker. Comm. Garcia moved to
approve Ordinance 2001-03. Comm. Henderson
seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
IV. JUNE LEAGUE OF CITIES DINNER - Comm. Tucker stated the Okaloosa County League of Cities Dinner would be held at the Eglin Officer's Club on June 21, 2001. The main theme throughout the evening will be Summer Fun.
V. GRAND OPENING OF TOWNHALL - The Commission set a tentative date of June 8, 2001 for the Grand Opening of the new Townhall. Comm. Tucker will compose a flyer for the event that will be mailed to all Shalimar residents and businesses. Special invitations will also be made for other guests.
MAYOR COMBS REPORT:
I. OKALOOSA COUNTY LEAGUE OF CITIES REPORT - None.
COMMISSIONER TUCKER'S REPORT:
I. FY01 FINANCIAL STATUS REPORT - Comm. Tucker discussed the Townhall renovation and that the project is still a high priority budget item. She asked all Town Departments to delay any non-critical purchases until next fiscal year.
II. COUNTY ONE-CENT SALES TAX REFERENDUM - Comm. Tucker said she is still waiting to receive notification from the county of an initial meeting concerning this issue.
COMMISSIONER GARCIA'S
REPORT:
I. OKALOOSA COUNTY VETERAN'S MEMORIAL - Comm. Garcia stated there is not a meeting this month regarding the Veteran's Memorial. The Committee is still trying to make a decision about how to finance the project.
COMMISSIONER REEVES' REPORT: Comm. Tucker thanked Comm. Reeves for his donation of free labor for the new kitchen cabinet installation.
COMMISSIONER HENDERSON'S REPORT: Comm. Henderson asked Comm. Tucker if the status of Town Manager Tom Burns' pending court action has changed. She stated Mr. Burns had hired an attorney and no action had taken place.
POLICE CHIEF'S
REPORT:
I. MONTHLY ACTIVITY REPORT - Chief Spires stated he called the Florida Department of Transportation regarding the legality of the left turn lane from Gardner Drive onto Eglin Parkway. The FLDOT confirmed the turn lane is legal, and the Town has the authority to place the restricted left turn sign. Comm. Tucker stated the issue would be tabled until a resident comes before the Commission with a complaint.

ADJOURNMENT: Comm. Henderson moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:35 p.m. Seconded by Comm. Garcia and passed unanimously.
